The size of the transport vehicle should follow economic principles. The loading port should be kept clean, and there should be no accumulated water or mortar in the bin. Water should not be added arbitrarily during transport and unloading to ensure that the mortar mix ratio meets the design requirements and thus guarantees the quality of the mortar.
After wet-mix mortar arrives on-site, it must be stored in airtight, non-absorbent containers. While iron containers offer good storage, the high investment cost hinders widespread use. Brick or block-built mortar pits, plastered with waterproof mortar (water absorption less than 5%), offer a low-cost alternative. However, the waterproof mortar plastering is crucial; the quality of the waterproof layer must be ensured. Adding fiber materials to the mortar reduces cracking. The mortar pit floor should have a slight slope for easy cleaning. The mortar pit should have a sufficiently large roof for protection from rain and sun. When storing mortar in the pit, completely cover the surface with plastic sheeting to maintain an airtight environment.
The location of the on-site mortar pit should facilitate unloading and vehicle access. Overly close spacing or poor connection to site roads may hinder unloading or access, impacting unloading speed. The mortar pit is typically 1.0–1.3 m high. A higher pit increases labor intensity; a lower pit reduces storage capacity, necessitating additional pits. The pit should have clear markings for easy mortar measurement.
To ensure the quality of wet-mix mortar and improve on-site management, the following measures should be taken during storage:
① Only mortar that has passed consistency and density checks, besides direct use, should be stored in the mortar pit.
② The mortar pit must be emptied before storage.
③ Mortar should be added to the marked level in the mortar pit and confirmed; then cover with plastic sheeting. Only one type of mortar should be stored in a pit at a time.
④ The mortar pit should be clearly labeled with the type, quantity, and storage start time of the mortar.
⑤ Use the mortar in batches to avoid repeated water evaporation.
⑥ Mortar should be used within the specified time and not after its setting time.
⑦ Do not add water to the mortar in the pit.
⑧ A small amount of bleeding may occur in the mortar pit; remix before use.
⑨ The storage temperature should not exceed 37℃ or fall below 0℃. Protect the mortar pit from direct sunlight and rain.
⑩ After use, immediately remove any remaining mortar from the pit walls, bottom, and plastic sheeting.
⑪ Clearly mark emptied pits for future use.
⑫ Do not reuse mortar residue from cleaning the pit.
